The Sisters of Charity began their organized work in caring for orphan children in the house on the corner of Washington and Bridge Streets which was purchased and presented ot them by Thomas Looby in 1866. They were incorporated in 1871 under the name of the City Orphan Asylum and erected in 1875 a brick building which with an addition in 1893 constitutes the present commodious asylum
