Fifty years ago the first Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, popularly known as the Duck Stamp, was issued to help raise funds for the preservation and improvement of America's waterfowl refuges. This first duck stamp featured two mallards dropping in on a marshy woodland pond. Designed by the noted conservationist and Pulitzer Prize winning artist Jay N. "Ding" Darling, the stamp began the legacy of what has become America's most cherished annual wildlife stamp. Now sold for $7.50, the Duck Stamp is required of all migratory waterbird hunters sixteen years of age and older. In addition, wildlife enthusiasts, conservationists and stamp collectors also purchase Duck Stamps, thus contributing to America's efforts to protect her wildlife. In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of America's Duck Stamp, the United States Postal Service issued the stamp featured on this Maximum Card. Significantly, this historic stamp features the artwork created by Jay N. "Ding" Darling for the original 1934 Duck Stamp
