On March 25, 1584, Walter Raleigh was granted permission by Queen Elizabeth I to establish an English colony in the New World. He sent several expeditions, but none of them successfully established a colony. Land was claimed in the name of the Queen, however ... and she was so pleased that she knighted Raleigh. Encourage, Sir Walter Raleigh sent another group of 117 settlers to the colony in Virginia. The leader - John White - was instructed to settle and explore the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. But the sailors of the ship refused to take the group any farther than Roanoke Island, so the settlers were forced to land there. Twenty-seven days after they arrived, on August 18, 1587, John White's grandchild - Virginia Dare - became the first English child to be born in the New World. White returned to England for more supplies and settlers, and didn't return until 1591. He was dumbfounded by what he found ... the Roanoke Colony was deserted and the only clue to the settlers' whereabouts was a single word scratched into a doorpost - Croatoan
