Additional Details:
After witnessing the destructive effects of erosion during the "Dust Bowls" of the 1930s, Congress established the Soil Conservation Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture on April 27, 1935. Since that time, the Soil Conservation Service has worked directly with the farmers, teaching them new farming techniques to reduce the hazards of floods and droughts. The Soil Conservation Service also holds demonstrations to promote soil and water conservation and new farming methods which avoid erosion. Working in cooperation with the Soil Conservation Service is the National Association of Conservation Districts, an organization which provides information and support services to farmers and ranchers. This group also conducts research, special projects, public information and communication programs and has nearly three thousand member districts nationwide. In honor of the Soil Conservation Service and the conservation efforts it has encouraged, the United States issued the stamp featured on this Maximum Card
