The Vietnam Vetern's Memorial First day of issue: November 10, 1984 First issue location: Washington, DC 20066 Ever since the proud patriots declared their independence from the British Crown, Americans had to fight to remain free. And each time America's sons and daughters have gone into battle to fight for justice and freedom, the veterns who have come home have been honored as some of our society's most respected citizens. However, when the veterns of the Vietname War returned home, many were not treated with the respect they deserved. For these brave men and women fought a war whose purpose was not fully understood. In fact it was not until 1982 that a national Vietnam Veterns Memorial was erected in memory of the men and women who served and died in the Vietnam War. Inscribed with the 57,939 names of the missing and dead Americans who fought the costly War, the Vietnam Veterns Memeorial is a shrine which captures America's pride in her veterns. In 1984, the Postal Service issued a special stamp to call attention to the Memorial... and to the courageous efforts of America's veterns
