THE BOY SCOUT HERO OF FRANCE-An
episode during the Great War of 1914.
Among the many tales of German atrocities none have
affected British hearts more than the simple tale of the
heroic scout who died for France.
During the German advance in the Vosges an E'clareur
(French boy scout) was captured; he was asked to indicate
the position held by his countrymen. He defiantly replied:
"Je suis Francais "(I am a Frenchman). This sealed his fate,
for at once they put him against a telegraph pole and called
out a firing-party. As the German officer rapped out the
words of command, the young hero whipped off his hat, and
crying out, "Vive la France," received his baptism of fire.
Verily, if the Blood of the Martyrs was the seed of the
Church, may we not believe that from this youth's blood,
sunk into the roadside, will spring armed resolute men to
avenge it.
