Additional Details:
In Utah the Seagull is sometimes referred to as the "Sacred Bird." In the spring of 1848 the "Mormon" pioneers were hopefully looking forward to a bountiful crop but large black crickets came down the mountain sides in hordes and began to devour the crops. All efforts to destroy the pests met with failure, when the seagulls came, like great clouds, fell upon the rickets and saved the crops. The people of Utah look upon this as a miracle, and the seagulls are protected by law as a consequence.
