Additional Details:
Organized settlement of Auckland began in 1842. At that time a great deal of progress was made by the first settlers and "elegant cottages" with well-planned gardens showed promise for a happy future. Queen Street was then a metal road flanked by ten buildings, one of which was the courthouse with stocks in front of it. Disastrous fires in 1872 and 1873 razed part of this important growing business area which had to be rebuilt. The first three-storied building to be erected was the South British Insurance building. In recent times, many old buildings have been demolished, being replaced by multistoried well-planned airy buildings. this picture shows the mingling of old and new architecture in the Queen Street of to-day
