One of the oldest colleges for women in the

opened in "Norland," former home of Col.
Clure in 1870. Col. McClure, a newspaper publisher was 5
a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. Norland was partiallyPM
destroyed by fire by, Confederate Cavalry in 1864 when
the town of Chambersburg was burned for refusing to
pay a ransom to save the town.
