Short history of world's only Corn Palace. The first Corn Palace was built in 1892 when Mitchell, South Dakota was a bustling city of less than 3,000 inhabitants, and had been established only 12 years. The present building is actually the third building to be so designated. Others were built in 195 and the present building was completed in 1921. The turrents were added in 1937 and in 1964 the building was enlarged and completely remodeled. Panels are changed each year, at an estimated cost of $15,000.00. Materials for the decorations are locally grown. Many noted entertainers have graced the stage of the auditorium which holds 3,500 for a stage performance and 4,500 for a basketball game. Famous speakers at the Palace have been Teddy Roosevelt, Howard Taft, William Jennings Bryan, Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy
