Madonna del Granduca, one of the loveliest of
Raphael's Madonnas, is among the treasures of the
Pitti Palace in Florence. Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio),
greatest of Italian painters of the Roman School, was born at
Urbino, 1483; died 1520. The picture belongs to his Florentine
period, and was formerly in the grand-ducal apartments,
hence its name.
