The development of the American flag followed a regular pattern. The 13 stripes were evolved to represent the 13 Colonies. There was no idea of separation from Great Britain, so the British Jack was put in the corner. When the committee was appointed to select an American flag, they naturally took the 13 stripes, and Rhode Island already had put the 13 stars in the Jack of their flag. It was planned to add both stars and stripes as States were admitted, but this was found impractical, and after the War of 1812, we went back to the original 13 stripes but added a star for each state
