HE INSCRIPTION READS:-Here on the morning of November 7th,
1835, ground was broken for the construction of the ERIE RAIL-
ROAD, designed to connect the Atlantic Ocean with the Great
Lakes. Its completion to Lake Erie was publicly celebrated in the city
of New York and along the route to Dunkirk, May 14, 15 and 16, 1851.
