The city of Las Animas is situated at the junc-
tion of the Arkansas and Las Animas rivers and
takes its name from the latter. This tributary
of the Arkansas in its course flows through a long
canyon, in which, according to legend, an entire
company of Spanish soldiers perished in the early
days of exploration. On this account the Span-
iards called the stream Rio de las Animas Peridas,
the river of lost souls.
There is an extensive system of canals in the
vicinity of Las Animas.
