KNUTE ROCKNE
In 1913, Notre Dame captain Knute Rockne teamed
with QB Gus Dorais to lead an unheralded Irish team to
a 35-13 upset of Army. Many believe the stunning ND
win was the most revolutionary college game ever
played, introducing the power of the forward pass to
the game. At the same time Notre Dame was elevated
to a national prominence they have retained ever since.
However, it is as head football coach at Notre Dame
that the immigrant boy from Norway established his
permanent mark on the American sports scene. From
1918-30, the Irish record under "The Rock" was 105-12-
5, a.881 winning percentage. Five of his 13 teams were
unbeaten.
Rockne died tragically in a Kansas plane crash March
31, 1931 at the height of popularity. It was his life story
and captivating way with people
- even more than
football that made him a legend. In a sport in which
coaches are frequently more important than players,
Knute Rockne was and still is regarded as the
greatest of them all.
