LONG ISLAND LIGHTHOUSES guide mariners through the
often turbulent waters that surround us. These many pictur-
esque aids to navigation were built in the late 1790's or early
1800's. The oldest and most famous, Montauk Point Light,
was authorized in 1795 by President George Washington.
