The USS JACKSON (SSBN) is one of the first of the nine
new Trident class of submarines. This huge “boat" is nearly
two football fields long (560 feet), has a 42' diameter, and
weighs 18,800 tons. It is equipped with four torpedo tubes
and 24 missile tubes. USS JACKSON has two crews (the
"blue" and the "gold”), which alternate aboard ship for six
month tours. Each crew consists of 157 officers and enlisted
personnel. Trident subs normally are named after states,
however this boat was named after former U.S. Senator
Henry M. (Scoop) Jackson, credited on the Senate floor as
a true "Defender of Freedom”.
