White Sands Missile Range has logged another missilery first its huge and
complex Redstone Service Structure or gantry crane, has operated for well
over one year without a single operational failure.
Such failure-free functioning of a missile servicing gantry has been unheard
of until now.
Stearns Electric Corporation has eight electro-magnetic disc brakes in service
on this structure, controlling a total weight of 250,000 pounds. In emergencies,
the tower must be lowered and it is then that the brakes must control the
cantilevered load to prevent a serious mishap.
