Washington level-luffing cranes
selected by Port of Seattle
Shown on the reverse is the first of four, 50-ton, pantograph-type,
level-luffing gantry cranes designed and manufactured by the
Washington Iron Works for the Port of Seattle. All four Washing-
ton cranes are scheduled to be in operation by May, 1964.
Advantages of level-luffing design include fast handling, with
hooks, of containers and general cargo, or with clamshell bucket
or grapple, of bulk materials or logs. Capacities are 50 tons at
55-foot radius, 15 tons at 90-foot radius. Gantry height is 65 feet,
track gauge, 32 feet. In the three newest Washington cranes,
power is supplied by 425-hp diesels, driving 300-kw generators
and motors. A.C. saturable reactor controls are used for swing
and travel, and D.C. variable voltage controls for hoisting and luffing.
