NEW PLYMOUTH POWER PROJECT TARANAKI N.Z. This is to be the
largest thermal power station in New Zealand with a design output of 600
megawatts. It can run on oil or natural gas. Area is 49 acres, 15 acres
being reclaimed from the sea. The chimney is 650ft high for dispersal of
all pollution. Inside are five flues with internal diameters of 11ft. In the
centre is a service lift. The windshield was made by a continuous pour of
5" per 24 hour day over 68 days. There are five main boilers to provide
840,000 lbs/hr of steam at 1,800 per sq. ins. at 1005°F. Each of the 5
turbines takes 55,000 gals per min. for cooling while in operation.
