G.M.V. ARAMOANA, N.Z. The rail-road ferry "Aramoana"
has provided the first physical link between the North and
South Islands railway sections. It was in 1862 that the first
suggestion of a train ferry was made and that was a year
before the first public railway between Christchurch and
Ferrymead was opened. For its 1,150 passenger maximum
the vessel has been built to the highest class of Lloyd's
Register of shipping. Standards of hull construction, fire
protection, main and auxiliary machinery, and electrical
installations conform to the standards required by the
International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea
(1948) for passenger ships engaged on short international
