Additional Details:
A mule-drawn float in one of Mobile's recent Mardi Gras night parades. Mardi Gras - The legend of the Mardi Gras that originated in Europe is a later outgrowth here of Mobile's first mystic society which is known as the famous old "Cowbellian de Rakins." This organization held its first celebration on New Year's Eve in 1831. On that eventful eve young men carried cowbells and rakes noisely through the city streets; and thus was born its name. Some of the original Cowbellians succeeded in 1842 to visit New Orleans en masse to present the first Mardi Gras ball of that city
