Twenty-one years of construction were required for completion of Illinois' Capitol Building. Ground was broken on March 11, 1868; the cornerstone laying took place on October 5, 1868; the building was first occupied in 1876, and construction work was finished in 1889. Charles F. Carpentier, Illinois' 29th Secretary of STate, was inaugurated on January 12, 1953
