V23. Roberto Clemente recorded his 3000 major league hit on September 30,
1972, a double. Standing on 2nd base he took his hat off to his fans. It
was the last hit of his life. "The Great One" died in an airplane crash
December 31, 1972. In 1973 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
In 18 years with the Pittsburgh Pirates he had a .317 batting average.
