One of three large U.S. Department of Energy facilities at Oak
Ridge, Tenn., 20 miles west of Knoxville, is Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL). Known as the X-10 Plant when Oak Ridge
was built during World War II, it was site of the world's first full-
scale nuclear reactor.
ORNL earned a reputation for excellence in development of
nuclear reactor technology and a pioneer program for production
of radioisotopes, widely used in medicine, agriculture, industry,
and research.
