ESSEX HARBOR at Essex, Conn., is located five miles from the mouth of the Connecticut River. Rich in history, the first U.S. warship, the 24-gun Oliver Cromwell, was launched in Essex to see action in the Revolution. In 1814 British Marines landed here and burned 28 local ships.
