Additional Details:
It was in 1542 that Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed up the coast of California to reach the latitude of San Francisco Bay. Here he was forced by severe storms to return to San Miguel Island where he died in 1543. For nearly seventy years the Spaniards held undisputed control on the Pacific Coast. The Spanish prohibited trade with other than Spanish ships. Soon smuggling was very common and Newport Bay trade with British and Yankee Clippers grew in size. Today one may dine on the waters of this sail-dotted laggoon-like bay on the deck of a replica of a river sternwheeler
