Gold was discovered in the Mono region in
1852. Waterman S. Body discovered gold here
in 1859. The change in spelling has been attri-
buted to a illiterate sign painter. In 1879 Bodie
had a population of over ten thousand, had the
worst climate on earth, and sin was every
where. "The Bad Men from Bodie" was known
everywhere. A day never went by without a
killing. With the towns 65 saloons, selling bad
whiskey, with bad climate, brought bad men. In
1880 there were 30 mines in operation, a great
number of fine restaurants. By 1883 all the
mines but two had closed and by 1887 these
were consolidated. The fire of June 24, 1932
destroyed most of what was left. . . M.P.
