Additional Details:
On this estate formerly stood a house in which resided Miss Caroline Plummer, the donor of the several Plummer gequests. capt. John Bertram purchased the estate after the decease of Miss Plummer and erected a fine brick dwelling house upon it in 1855. Some years after his heirs December 1st, 1887 offered the estate to the city for a public library building and the offer was accepted. The building is surrounded with an ample lawn on which stands the Bertram Elm, the finest American elm in this region, measuring seventeen feet in circumference
