Without a doubt John Ascuaga's Nugget presents the biggest entertainers in the world! Bertha and Tina, the performing elephants, appear nightly in the Circus Room Theater-Restaurant. Bertha, a native of India, was born in 1945. Full grown, she weighs 5 tons. In the spring of '73 baby Tina weighed in at 2 tons. Her expected growth rate is 400 pounds a year until age 21. She was born in Thailand in 1965. Both elephants enjoy a balanced diet of oat hay, a variety of vegetables, fruit and bread. Like all big stars, Bertha and Tina enjoy special attention. Their skis is smoothed frequently with coarse sand paper material, their wire-like hair is singed three times a year with a blowtorch, and they have extensive pedicures every six weeks. Trained and directed by C.J. Madison, the prized pachyderms live in a specially constructed elephant barn near the Nugget |
