HAINES, located on the upper arm of the Lynn
Canal, originally began as an Indian trading post.
Today logging and fishing form a large part of the
economy. The Alaska Marine High way System pro-
vides access to and from Haines for traffic on the
Haines cutoff to the Alaska High way. PORT
CHILKOOT (on left) has been designated a histori-
cal site as it was the first permanent U.S. Army
Post to be established in Alaska.
