GOYO HASHIGUCHI (1880-1921) was one of the major artists commis-
sioned by the publisher Shosaburo Watanabe to produce new colour prints
for foreign connoisseurs ... in the spirit of the best old masters'. Goyo's
innate Japanese sense of strong design and attention to detail was tempered
by a sensual, relaxed quality which he had learned from his study of
Western art and techniques. The Woman after the Bath, who modestly
turns her back to the spectator, was one of the first successful prints of
nudes to be published in Japan.
