In the 19th century, the steamboat was used to transport mail to
river towns along inland waterways. Steamboats transformed
uncharted waterways into America's first superhighways and
helped impart, for the first time, a "national” feeling, even among
settlers in the country's most distant outposts. The stamp was
designed by Mark Hess.
