It is a warmer greeting than “'Sincerely," but certainly not
as intimate as “Love.” For most, it is an honest expression
and can be given to casual acquaintances as well as to
very good friends. “Best Wishes" can be sent across
many, many miles or just across town. And “Best Wishes''
express — in a most fitting way — a certain optimism and
pleasant intent. The phrase "Best Wishes" is found at the
close of personal letters — and even business letters —
and on cards sent for almost every occasion. In fact, “Best
Wishes" is offered and accepted in America most any-
where, most anytime. Americans find in this lovely phrase
the perfect catch-all for in-between circumstances
those times when it would be too personal to say more,
and too cold to say less, but to say just this seems right.
When the United States Postal Service decided to issue a
booklet of stamps to honor all the special occasions we
enjoy, the “Best Wishes' theme was, naturally, selected
for inclusion. This is the phrase accepted and used to
adorn almost every special occasion in our lives
