The summit of Tehachapi Range is reached by a series of remarkable loops and tunnels. The altitude of the pass is 4,000 feet. A rapid descent is made into Bakersfield, one of the important towns of California, which is at the edge of the San Joaquin Valley, 32,000 square miles in extent.
