Rushmore Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota is the largest sculpture ever attempted by man. This picture was made from the base of the mountain, looking upward, to show the infinite pains taken by Gutzon Borglum, Sculptor, to achieve artistic perfection in the finished work. Note the life-like expression on Lincoln's face as it emerges from the solid granite of the mountain. Note also, how the sculptor has made use of light and shadow to give expression to Lincoln's right eye. Even the only partly finished you will note the clever method used to portray Roosevelt's eye-glasses. It requires but little imagination to see actual lenses in front of his eyes. |
