The Illinois State Capitol was built at a cost of more than $4,500,00. Ground was broken on March 11, 1868 and still unfinished this building was first occupied in 1876. It wasn't until 1866 that the present Capitol was completed. The extreme length of the building from North to South is 379 feet, and from East to West 268 feet. The height from the ground line to the top of the dome is 361 feet, and to the tip of the flagstaff 405 feet. The highest building in Central Illinois.
