The St. Bernard derived its name from he Hospice at St. Bernard Pass, in the Swiss Alps, which was founded by the noted Monk St. Bernard de Monthon, in 980. In 1810 they were imported to England, and much work was done at that time to fix the standard for size, type, color and coat. They were first shown in America in 1879. They have been credited with saving more than 3000 lives. they are a wonderful guardian and companion for children.
