Additional Details:
The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (Patio) ordered its 15,000 members to walk off their posts in an illegal strike designed to cripple the nation's air-transport system. Outraged, President Reagan replied with a stiff ultimatium - “get back to work or be fired!” The order was defied and some 12,000 union members lost the battle. Flight schedules were slowly restored as military controllers shared the burden of keeping the planes in the air. Early August, 1981.
