Most of the well-known landmarks in the “Big Apple” and its environs are visible in these 30-meter resolution thematic Mapper images taken from the Landsat-4 spacecraft. The five Boroughs of New York are quite evident: Brooklyn, in the lower right; Queens, upper right: Manhatten, center; the Bronx, top center, and Staten Island, bottom center. Across the Hudson (along which many piers can be seen) are Newark and Jersey City (above Staten Island), Elizabeth City (note the storage tank forms) to the west, and Peterson, near upper left corner, along with other New Jersey towns, Central Park stands out in the darker area (because of shadow casting tell buildings) of Manhattan. The island on which the Statue of Liberty rests is just south of the Battery and the Brooklyn bridge is the first encountered going up the East river.
