Recruits jump from tower in an “Abandon ship” drill as part of their Third Class Swimmer's Test in the “training tank.” USNTC is located on Lake Michigan, 35 miles north of downtown Chicago and four miles from Waukegan. It is the oldest and largest facility of its kind in the U. S. Its essential role is recruit training of inductees, and the operation of service schools for student Navy personnel. |
