Oldest bank in the nation. Built in 1797. Alexander Hamilton was instrumental in having The Bank of the United States chartered by Congress in 1791. The building was purchased by Stephen Girard in 1812, after the 20 year charter expired, and he conducted a private bank until his death in 1831.
