Next to the Columbia, the Colorado River
is the principal American tributary to the
Pacific. It was discovered in 1540 by Alarcon,
who ascended at a considerable distance from
the Gulf of California and later in the same
year one of Coronado's lieutenants reached
it over land from New Mexico.
