"Cliveden" at Johnson St. and Germantown Ave., was built by Chief Justice Benjamin Chew in 1761. Occupied by a detachment of British troops during the Battle of Germantown, Oct. 4, 1777, it broke the American advance, successful up to that point. Scene of a public reception to Lafayette in 1824.
