Additional Details:
Jackson Square was named after the hero of the battle of New Orleans, General Andrew Jackson, "Old Hickery" who was received enthusiastically by the people of the city on his return form the historical battle, in 1815. The equestrain statue in the centre of the square was erected to his memory in 1846. It is a remarkable piece of work, weighs 20,000 pounds. The horse rears on his hind legs without support. It is worth seeing.
