On May 18, 1980 the volcanic peak of mount St. Helens, dormant for 123 years, Experienced a major eruption. The picture on the left reflects Spirit Lake at the base of the mountain Before any volcanic activity. The second photograph was taken one hour after the major eruption blew over 2,000 feet of the top of the mountain. The top of the mountain fell inwards, forming a crater and totally changing the character of Spirit lake. Mud flows can be seen cascading down the mountain. The cloud of volcanic particles rises up to 60,000 feet in the atmosphere and has spread over most of the United States.
