of the Capitol of the United States of
America at Washington DC.

This trowel was first used by General Washing-
ton at the laying of the corner store of the Na-
tional Capitol in 1793. It was used a second time
for the laying of the corner stone of the Smith-
sonian Institution in 1846, and shortly afterward
for the laying of the corner stone of the Wash-
ington Monument on July 4, 1848. It was used
by President Roosevelt in 1907 for the laying of
the corner stone of the Masonic Temple in Wash-
ington, D. C., and, on November 1, 1923, at the
laying of the corner stone of the George Wash-
ington Masonic National Memorial at Alexandria.
