British forces took the bells to England as a Revolutionary War prize; later returned by a London merchant. Confederate forces used the steeple as a lookout post. Federal gunners used it as a point of aim during bombardment of 1863 and their shells landing in and around the church destroyed part of this beautiful landmark, Washington, Lee, La Fayette and other notables have worshipped here.
