Additional Details:
Caldwell's Presbyterian Church in Springfield, N. J. was subjected to heavy fire during the Battle of Springfield in the American Revolution. Reverend James Caldwell, known as the 'militant parson,' famously ran out of gun wadding and used hymnals, uttering 'Give 'em Watts, Boys!' The Historic Caldwell Parsonage in Union, N. J., an original 1782 building, was burned by the British after the murder of Hannah Caldwell, wife of Rev. James Caldwell, by a British soldier on June 7, 1780.
