| The Tomb of Washington at Mount Vernon, VA, is a plain brick structure overgrown with ivy. On a slab over its arched gateway is inscribed: "Within this inclosure rest the remains of General George Washington." It is a spot sacred to all Americans; a shrine visited annually by thousands. Its preservation is due to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, who, by patriotic courage, acquired the estate by purchase in 1860. |
